Facebook, Google hit with privacy complaints hours after GDPR takes effect

New privacy complaints have been filed against Facebook and Google hours after European Union’s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect yesterday. According to experts if these privacy violations are proved, the two companies may have to shell out fines in tune of up to $9.3 billion in total. With regard to privacy, Google, Facebook and Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Instagram are forcing people to adopt a “take it or leave it” approach which essentially amounts to demanding that users submit to intrusive terms of service, according to the the Austrian privacy-advocacy group Noyb.eu, CNET reported on Friday. “Tonnes of ‘consent …

Hyperfast robot solves the Rubik’s cube in 0.38 seconds

Researchers have developed a new hyperfast robot that is capable of solving the Rubik’s cube in 0.38 seconds – a world record setting time. The current world record of solving the Rubik’s cube in least amount of time is held by Albert Beer of Germany for his robot that solves the cube in just 0.637 seconds. The latest claim by student researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of their robot able to solve the cube in 0.38 seconds is yet to be independently verified by Guinness World Record. The robot was built by Ben Katz, a student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and software developer …

Electric vehicle driving range could be doubled, study says

Researchers have said it is possible to increase the driving range of electric vehicles by almost double the current range through modifications in the salt concentrations. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory researchers demonstrated a small lithium-metal battery can re-charge about seven times more than batteries with conventional electrolytes. A battery’s electrolyte solution shuttles charged atoms between electrodes to generate electricity. Finding an electrolyte solution that doesn’t corrode the electrodes in a lithium-metal battery is a challenge but the PNNL approach, published online in Advanced Materials, successfully creates a protective layer around the electrodes and achieves significantly increased charge/discharge …

Vitamin D rich diet said to lower cholesterol in kids

Scientists have established through a study a possible link between consumption of vitamin D rich diet and lowering of cholesterol levels in children. According to researchers at University of Eastern Finland vitamin D rich diet also have beneficial impact on other risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases. For the study researchers analyzed data from nearly 500 children aged between six and eight years. Children with vitamin D level of more than 80 nmol/l (nanomoles per litre) had lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol levels than those whose vitamin levels were below 50 nmol/l, which is often regarded as a threshold value …
